Campbrounds Collaborate in Summer-long Effort to Save Lives
STATEWIDE (May 21, 2009):
A campaign to boost the seasonal blood supply
is under way in RV parks and campgrounds across Michigan. The campaign, which
began May 16 and will run through September 6, marks the second annual blood
drive effort by Michigan members of the Association of RV Parks &
Campgrounds (ARVC) and Michigan Blood.
According to Tom Briggs,
ARVC-Michigan Marketing Committee Chairperson and owner of Grand Rogue Campground
in Grand Rapids, this year’s blood drive campaign will “last longer, involve
more campgrounds, and collect more blood than last year.”
This year 16 ARVC members are
hosting a total of 22 blood drives including several on the Memorial Day,
Independence Day, and Labor Day holiday weekends. Historically these weekends
are among the hardest times of year to keep blood donations flowing. Four ARVC
members have scheduled blood drives over Memorial Day weekend (see list below).
All the ARVC
members’ blood drives will be open to all campground guests and to the public.
“The goal this year is to have at
least 20 people donate at each of the drives,” says Kona Kenny, recruiter for Michigan Blood in West Michigan. “We had a great launch for the
campaign last year, and this year should be even better.”
ARVC-Michigan represents some 225+
member campgrounds with more than 32,000 sites available throughout the state. ARVC-Michigan’s
mission is to lead in the development of the RV Parks and Campground industry through
education, communication, and representation. ARVC Michigan is a member of the National Association of RV Parks &
Campgrounds.
Hospitals in four major regions of the
state count on Michigan Blood for their blood supply. After
these hospitals have all the blood they need, Michigan Blood
regularly shares blood to help meet other needs across the state and nation,
including the US military, upon request.
